Walks coming up

Our RTA Walk leaders met today to draw up a selection of walks for the Sept. ’26 to June ’27 year that hopefully will cater for those who like the challenging uphill walks and also for those who prefer the lowland walks. We kick start the programme with a lovely easy walk that we know is suitable for all levels of ability and look forward to a big turn-out.

Our first RTAI walk of 2026/2027 year will be on Wednesday next, 9th September in the Glenasmole valley, the Bohernabreena Reservoir. This valley is a Designated Area of Special Conservation and the reservoir, constructed in the 1880s is managed by Dublin City Council and is a source of drinking water for about 35,000 households in South Dublin. The water is piped from the reservoir to Ballyboden (7.5km away) for treatment and from there to your kitchen.

Walkers have two options on this walk.

(1) Choose the longer or shorter option of the two routes. Those who would like the longer option should meet at the car-park in Kiltipper Park. This is located at the upper end of Kiltipper Road and has over 50 car parking spaces.  Car-pool if possible. We will set off from Kiltipper car-park at 10.30am and make our way through the park to exit opposite the entrance to the Bohernabreena Reservoir Park where we will join the walkers who have chosen option two, the shorter walk.

(2) If you wish to take the shorter walk, park in the car-park at the entrance to the waterworks in Bohernabreena. There is a maximum of 15 car spaces here so car-pooling is definitely recommended. Please do not park on the road. We will set off from here at 11am and walk up to and around the upper lake.

It is best to wear walking boots, not runners, – the circuit around the upper lake is subject to water pooling. Bring a snack.

Following the walk you may wish to drop in to have a light lunch in the café attached to the Kiltipper Woods Care Centre, in Thomas Davis GAA Clubhouse (on Kiltipper Road), The Old Mill on Old Bawn Road or in The Edge café on Avonmore Road, Tallaght.

10.30 am – Kiltipper Car Park

11.00am – Bohernabreena Waterworks Car Park.
