Cancellation of Luggala Walk

As you know we had planned on having a walk in Luggala today, Wednesday and I’m sure that many of our regular walkers were looking forward to taking to the hills. Unfortunately, because of the threatened awful weather being forecast for the next two days we have called off this walk. So tóg breá bog é ar maidin agus beidh lá eile againn dos’ na sléibhte amach anseo. N.B. If you know of any body who had planned on going on this walk perhaps you would let them know of its cancellation.

Please feel free to come along to our drop-in in Blackrock Education Centre on Friday between 11am and 1pm.

The Special Olympics have organised a public collection in the Dublin area to take place on this Friday. The organising committee are looking for some volunteer collectors to help with this collection and should you be able to give two or more hours to this cause please contact Ann on             086 2234329      .

April Walk from Luggala

About next Wednesday: we are doing a walk partly along the Wicklow Way starting at Luggala which is on the road from Roundwood to the Sally Gap. For those coming from Rathfarnham direction: drive to the Sally Gap, turn left and drive about 6 kms past Ballinastoe woods and the Pier Gates to a forest opening on the right hand side opposite what looks like a derelict car-park in a field. There is only room at this entrance for about 7 cars so car-pooling would be a great help. Extra cars can park along the road.

Dennis Gill will accompany us and will be at the Silver Tassie at 10.30am to meet with those who want to leave cars there. I will be at Tymon Park, further along Wellinton Lane from the Spawell (where we can no longer leave cars!) leaving at 10.15am for anyone who wants to meet up there. People coming from town can take bus 150 or 54A and get off at the stop for St McDara’s school. Park entrance is very close to there.

The walk should be 3 hours or less and is not very demanding, but can be wet underfoot in places so boots are needed. There are 2 deserted villages on the route and we will probably have lunch in the second one overlooking Loughs Tay and Dan. On a fine day the views are wonderful and there are deer and (at least one) red squirrel along the route!

Anyone who needs further information can contact me at 0877741953

April Activities

Beatha agus sláinte chughat.
Fáilte ar ais go Bleá Cliath roimh na daoine a thug cuairt ar Cardiff i rith na seachtaine agus a d’fhill ar ais aréir. Tá ár mbuíochas tuilte ag Marjorie Murphy a d’eagraigh an turas seo ó thús go deireadh agus a chinntigh gur bhain gach éinne sár taitneamh as an turas.

Don tseachtain seo chughainn:

Our Club Miscellaney resumes on this Tuesday in Club na Múinteoirí with an hour devoted to James Joyce. You may know that “Dubliners” is the book chosen for the month of April in the One City, One Book project and many events are planned around the city associated with it. We have invited a speaker to this miscellaney who will hopefully give us a greater insight into this significant part of the James Joyce collection of works. In advance of Tuesday perhaps you would consider taking your copy of Dubliners down off the bookshelves and renewing acquaintance with it. Please feel free to bring it along to the Club – you may wish to read a short excerpt – favourite piece perhaps – or not. There is no pressure – come along and enjoy the occasion and I’m confident it will be very enjoyable.
The Miscellaney will commence at 11.30am in the lounge of Club na Múinteoirí and will be followed by the usual light lunch. The overall cost per head covering lunch and speaker etc is €10, payable at the start of the Miscellaney. Please assemble at about 11.20. – and feel free to extend the invitation to friend / partner.
For lunch purposes I need to have a good indication of numbers attending by Sunday night / Monday morning. Let me know by e-mail preferably.

Walk: On next Wednesday we will have our monthly “more challenging” walk in the Luggala area of County Wiclow. Please read the attached message from Deirdre McLoughlin who is one of our leaders on this walk. Note that the car parking space in Luggala is rather restricted and car pooling from Tymon Car Park and from The Silver Tassie is strongly recommended. Walking Boots are essential. Looking forward to a very good turn-out on this hill walk which Deirdre and Denis envisage taking about three hours.

Family History Class: Because Máire, the class teacher was indisposed on last Thursday the class was postponed. The class will resume in Sandyford Community Centre on this Thursday – starting promptly at 9.30 and the postponed class will be added on at the end of the term. My thanks to all concerned for your understanding with the postponement at short notice of the class.

Ag súil le bualadh leat ag ceann d’eachtraí na seachtaine.

Micheál Ó Gríofa, Rúnaí.

Are there twenty members who would like to be part of the next series of classes. These would commence on Thursday morning 22nd March and continue for 10 weeks with a two week break for Easter. The same venue – Sandyford Community Centre at Lamb’s Cross, Sandyford 9.20 to 11.30am. The cost (to include the guided visits to the 3 repositories) would be €85. If you are interested please let me know by Wednesday afternoon of this week. I am anxious to hold the time slot in the venue if there is sufficient interest in forming a new class. Our Family History Class will be held as usual on this Thursday morning. The visit to the National Archives Office in Bishop St will take place on Monday, 12th March at 5pm. Please note the time and date of this visit.

Our next “easier” walk is scheduled for Wednesday, 14th March. The walk on this occasion will bring us by the coast from Bray to Greystones – a lovely walk offering you the opportunity to do it one way and return by DART to Bray or doing the return walk by the same route. Well done to our Glendalough walkers who had one of the finest days of the year so far to enjoy the beauty of the Valley.

RTAI Rules and Constitution: Tá ár mbuíochas tuilte ag na toscairí a fhreastail ar son Chraobh Áth Cliath Theas ag an gcruinniú i gClub na Múinteoirí ar an Satharn seo chaite. Walking in Glendalough

Our next walk is on Wednesday next, 29th February. This is for the more experienced walkers, some of whom may have done this walk in the past. Those who have walked The Metals and Ballinastoe should find this walk within their capacity and wear the usual walking gear.
See the message below from Betty. Our thanks to Betty and to Deirdre for their continued dedication to the cause. All of our walkers are in safe hands.

I have still some places on offer for our visit to the Hugh Lane Gallery on Tuesday next – If you are interested, please contact me by tomorrow evening.
Go raibh míle maith agat
Micheál

The walk on 29th February will be in Glendalough. Deirdre Mc Gloughlin and myself will lead.

I suggest that people regroup and car pool in either the Silver Tassie or the Spawell carparks leaving both about 10.00 to reach Glendalough and ready and start walking around 11 o’clock.

Anyone wishing to travel alone we can meet them in the Education/Interpretive centre carpark which is the first carpark on the left.

The walk will take us over the bridge and bring us on a very short road walk leading to St. Kevins way which we leave after a short distance and walk up to join the Miner’s road to the Miner’s village.

This walk is well within the scope of all previous walkers.

Hopefully we will see many interesting things during the course of the walk which should take about 3 to 3 and half  hours including a stop for lunch at the Miner’s Village.

The usual reminder about boots, wet gear, no jeans and change of clothes applies

Ar dtús ár mbuíochas agus árd mholadh d’aisteoirí Club na Múinteoirí a chuir fáilte romhainn tráthnóna go dtí an dráma “The Steward of Christendom”. Táim cinnte gur bhain gach éinne a bhí i láthair an-taitneamh as an léiriú.
Na baill atá ag freastal ar an rang ghinealachas – bhí seisiún an-shuimiúl acu le déanaí ins an Leabharlann Náisiúnta ag baint triail as na foinsí eolais ata ann san ábhar spéisiúl seo – ár mbuíochas do Mháire Mac Chonghail a eagraigh an cuairt seo. RTAI Trip to Cardiff

We are running out of options for holiday breaks in Ireland. To date we have visited Wexford, Sligo, Galway, Derry, Mayo, Cork City & West Cork and Kilkenny and have managed to visit most of the places of interest in these locations. Therefore, this year, it seemed appropriate to look elsewhere.

Using Marathon Travel, (the company we use for day trips) we have put together the following:

Monday April 16thPick up at Club na Múinteoirí @ 5.30am (this is not a typo!!)                                                               Travel to Rosslare for ferry crossing to Fishguard at 9.00am.  Travel to Cardiff to Maldron Hotel in city centre for 4 nights B&B + 4 evening meals

Tuesday April 17th:  Drive to Bath for a day of sightseeing and/or shopping. On arrival in Bath each person will                                     be given a day ticket for the hop-on bus in the city. This allows everyone to decide for themselves what they want to see and how long they wish to spend in any one place.

Wednesday April 18thToday we stay in Cardiff. Our coach will take us on a tour of the city including guided                                           tours of Cardiff Castle and the Millennium Stadium. Time to explore and shop at your own pace.

Thursday April 19th:  Today we travel to Wells and enjoy a guided tour of Wells Cathedral. Time to explore Wells itself and weather permitting we return to Cardiff via the Cheddar Gorge.

Friday April 20th.; Today we return to Dublin on the Ferry (sailing 2.30pm) and our coach returns us to Parnell Sq.

Costs:

4 nights B&B, 4 evening meals + all entry fees to places of interest, per person sharing.    = €450

4 nights B&B, 4 evening meals + all entry fees to places of interest, in a single room          = €530

Single rooms are very strictly limited and will be allocated on a strictly “first come basis.”

To secure a place a non-refundable deposit of €50 must be returned to me on or before Feb 29th 2012. Cheques should be made payable to R.T.A.I.

All forms + deposit should be sent to Marjorie Murphy, 10 St. Joseph’s Place, Nelson St, Dublin 7.

The balance of the cost (€400 & €480) must be paid by March 30th 2012

Best wishes                                                                                                            Marjorie

Genealogy Class Visit the National Library

The Genealogy class went on a visit to the National Library this week.  They are being very coy about any skeletons they discovered in their family closets!  They do admit to thoroughly enjoying the visit though and there were offers from the nearby National Museum to take a few of them in as national institutions!  Modesty forbids me mentioning any names!!

Here are two snaps of the happy group on their visit.

RTAI February Walking Activity

Beatha agus sláinte chughat.
Fáilte ar leith romhaibh siúd a chláraigh a seolta ríomh – phost linn le déanaí.
Walking: We have planned a nice “easy” walk for this Wednesday and we look forward to a good turnout.
The route of the walk is from Clonskeagh to Bushy Park, Terenure following the river Dodder all the way. That is for those who wish to start at Clonskeagh and follow the path up river to Bushy Park.
We will also have a group starting at Bushy Park and walking downriver to Clonskeagh.
For those starting at Clonskeagh: The meeting place is the car-park of O’Shea’s pub – this is on your right as you drive from Ranelagh to Clonskeagh. I have spoken to the management of O’Shea’s and they welcome our custom at any time. They suggest that we park at the far end of the car park. We meet at 10.15 and move off at 10.30am.

Those starting at Bushy: We park at the roadside car park just after Rathfarnham Shopping Centre. There is a footbridge across the Dodder near the car park leading into Bushy Park. Assemble at this car park at 10.15. There is also the option of parking in the lower car park of Rathfarnham Shopping Centre and walking down to the assembly point. ( Partners Coffee shop and the Swiss Deli are located upstairs in the shopping centre should you need your early morning coffee “fix” ) Please be at the assembly point on time as we will move off at 10.30.

The walk  should take about an hour each way and is on the flat all the way. Obviously those who wish to do so may shorten the walk and return by the same route back to their starting point. Coimeád súil amach don Síle Raga.
Please take care of passing traffic while crossing over Rathfarnham Road, Orwell Road and at one other short stretch where we move away from the river on to the street footpath at Dartry.

Golf Outing: Focal ó Dónall Ó Murchú: Those who had signed on for the Golf outing last Thursday (cancelled because of the frost) should note that Donall is trying to find an alternative day for the golf outing. Nuair atá sochrú nua déanta beimíd i dteangmháil leat.

The Family History class, Digital Camera classes and Bridge will run as scheduled this week.

The Steward of Christendom: Thirty two places have been reserved at this point for the production at 3pm on 21st February, Should you wish to add your name to the list do so as soon as possible.

Bain taitneamh as eachtraí na seachtaine.
